衛冕軍西班牙首戰1：5不敵荷蘭，丟球率低的西班牙，是自1963年以來，再度於國際賽出現這麼多的丟球數。

1963年在馬德里的熱身賽，西班牙2：6敗給蘇格蘭，時隔51年，在世界盃舞台上被上屆爭冠對手荷蘭進了5球。

2006年德國與2010年南非世界盃，西班牙加總丟了6球，這一次第一戰就丟了5球，前一次在世界盃輸這麼多，恰巧也在巴西，為1950年世界杯，被巴西進了6球。

世界盃史上，小組賽第一場掉超過4球或4球以上還能晉級的隊伍只出現過一次，為2006年的烏克蘭，擊敗他們的正好是西班牙，當時烏克蘭0：4落敗。
