6年半來，美國聯準會(Fed)一直維持利率於接近零水平，幾乎同一期間，金融市場則一直預測Fed將於何時開始升息。

大多經濟學家預期，短期內，應無可能。由於經濟仍低於正常水平，且通貨膨脹仍偏低，至少9月之前，Fed仍將維持利率於低點。

本周三，Fed政策會議結束後，可能對升息計劃，略做 說明。但分析師警告，無需期待Fed會暗示升息的時間表。美國經濟仍有太多不確定性，Fed決策官員恐得留下運作空間，直到經濟健康變得較為明朗。

3月會議後，Fed透過不再說對開始升息具有「耐心」的措辭，為今年升息敞開了大門。大多經濟學家說，Fed在其聲明中，取消「耐心」措辭，意味Fed可能在6月即升息。此一行動將減少貸款，對股市與債市構成壓力。

但在稍後的記者會上，Fed主席葉倫強調，雖然Fed取消了「耐心」措辭，但仍未決定何時開始升息。葉倫說，任何決議都將取決於最新的經濟數據。而那時以來的經濟數據，大多讓人失望。
