暌違了3年之久的紅色月全食在10月8日星期三傍晚入夜後發生，臺北天文館表示，由於臺北地區天氣不佳，臺北天文館特別派遣同仁周紹孔先生南下至新竹海邊的南寮地區進行觀測，透過偶爾飄過的雲朵，將這個與臺灣人民暌違了3年之久的紅色月全食記錄下來，並與全台民眾一起分享。

臺北天文館表示，月全食是所有壯觀天象中最容易觀察的，本次是自2011年12月10日以來，臺灣地區首度可觀賞的月全食，並且還發生天王星衝與天龍座流星雨，相當難得。本次月全食，食分1.172，臺灣全區可見月出帶食，即月球東昇時，已在初虧至食既的偏食階段，食既到生光的全食時間長達約1小時，在此期間可見月球全部進入地球本影而呈現紅銅色外觀。但因時值傍晚，天空背景光由亮至暗變化甚大，需至18:23航海暮光終後天空背景較暗，全食月球所呈現的紅色才比較明顯。

臺北天文館表示，今晚雖然因為雲層遮蔽而無法親眼看到月全食，但來到臺北天文館現場參加月全食活動的數百位民眾熱情不減，透過網路轉播畫面觀看國內外的月食即時影像，並經由天文館工作同仁的解說，更深入地瞭解月食發生的原因和其他種種與月食相關的知識和故事，收穫也不少喔！
